Doesn't it look like leather? haha I made this bowl from a slab of clay. I'm always amazed at how something two dimentional can become three dimentional! I draped the slab over a large plastic bowl i had lying around. I then formed the clay around the bowl. I scratched up the whole outside of the bowl (that's the texture that you see poking through). This scratching served two purposes: texture and tooth. Texture for pretties, and tooth for the slabs I added onto the outside of the bowl. These little scraps of clay make the bowl look like leather. This bowl is unlike anything Ive ever made. I usually throw all my pots on the wheel and they are pretty round and symetrical, not this one. The last step I did to this bowl is dart for corners. This made the bowl taper slightly inward. The tapering makes it look somewhat like a basket, for some reason.
Inspiration credit goes to Laura Brandenburg of www.facebook.com/stonewares . She is a wife, mommy (soon to be a mommy again) and talented potter. Laura and I both sell our wares at a local farmer's market, www.facebook.com/barrstreetmarket on saturday mornings. I noticed this lovely vase of hers while I was selling two booths down. She normally throws on the wheel as well, so it caught my eye. I went down and complimented her and got a closer look. It was lovely. It inspired me. So, here's to Laura Brandenburg! Thanks for the inspiration. She has a blog, too: www.stonewares.blogspot.com .
